Daniel wandered the art room, trying not to be impatient with the rest of the students. It was the last day of class, which meant putting their paintings on display and letting the other students, as well as a few friends and family, offer positive critique and comment. The idea was a good one, especially for this kind of class, but he had run out of patience for complimentary chit-chat. He hadn’t invited his family. He wasn’t ready to have them in this part of his life, at least not yet. He was, however, ready for everyone else to leave, and for some quiet time talking with Valerie. He still had some reservations about launching into a relationship, but he couldn’t deny the attraction he felt. She’d been on his mind continually since their ride up the canyon, and he liked having her there.

Another fifteen minutes dragged by before the other students gathered their projects and began to leave. Daniel returned to his station, trying to study his artwork instead of watch Valerie as she said her goodbyes. As much as he was ready for class to end, he appreciated her awareness of her students. She knew precisely what they’d worked on and took a moment to encourage each person in continuing their art with specific comments of things they might want to study or emphasize.

Finally, the last student left. Valerie sighed, sounding relieved, and Daniel smiled at the sound. “Glad to be done?”

“Yes, and no.” Valerie crossed the room, pulling over a stool and sitting next to him. “I love these classes. They’re small, and everyone who signs up wants to be here, so we get a lot done. A lot more than a room full of high school seniors, half of whom are just looking for an easy A. However, it’s also a lot of work, and I’m just as glad to be done for a while.”

Daniel lifted an eyebrow. “For a while? I thought you had an advanced figure drawing class starting soon.”

Valerie shook her head, reaching up and twisting her ponytail into a knot, shoving a pen in the twist to keep it in place. “There was, but they didn’t get enough sign ups to hold the class. I’m honestly just as glad. The extra money would be nice, but I really only have a couple weeks before I’ll need to start preparing for school. Not having an extra class on top of it will be okay, and maybe I’ll have time to finish a couple of my standing projects along the way. There’s an art contest at the end of August I’d like to have something ready for.”

Daniel nodded. He was quietly relieved since he’d been trying to figure out how to juggle the class along with the private lessons. Connor had reunited with his girlfriend and was suddenly much less available for babysitting, which was complicating Daniel’s schedule. “I hope there will still be time for private lessons, and maybe for a dinner or two.
